As one of Australia’s most celebrated horse trainers, Gai Waterhouse is renowned for her groundbreaking achievements and resilience.
Growing up immersed in the racing world, Gai’s journey began as an actress before she transitioned to horse training, where she shattered barriers in a male-dominated industry. Her relentless pursuit of excellence saved her father’s stables during challenging times and led to reforms in Federal anti-discrimination laws when she fought for her trainer’s license.
A trailblazer and national icon, Gai is one of only four trainers to achieve a century of Group 1 winners and holds the record for 11 Group 1 wins in a single season. Listed as one of Australia’s Living Treasures, her bust, now part of the Australian Racing Museum’s permanent collection, is a tribute to her legacy and enduring influence on the sport.
