The Gethsemane and the Way of the Cross is a powerful and evocative bronze installation located in the serene Gethsemane Memorial Garden at Macquarie Park Cemetery. This collection of intricately crafted sculptures, created by Linda Klarfeld, vividly depicts the Passion of Christ through a series of fourteen stations, including life-sized figures and detailed reliefs. Each station invites contemplation of Christ's journey to the crucifixion, offering a profound spiritual experience for visitors.
The installation includes scenes such as the Last Supper, where the disciples gather around Jesus in an emotional tableau; Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, capturing the intense moment of prayer and surrender; and Jesus is Condemned by Pilate, where intricate figures portray the fateful judgment. Other notable stations, such as Jesus Carries His Cross, Jesus Falls, and Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem, showcase expressive groupings of onlookers, soldiers, and mourners, bringing the narrative to life.
The centerpiece is a striking bronze figure of Jesus on the cross, which rises dramatically against the open sky. This sculpture portrays Christ's crucifixion with poignant realism, from the detailed musculature to the raw emotion on His face, inviting reflection on the sacrifice made. Additional reliefs not pictured, such as Jesus and the Good Thief, Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross, and Jesus is Laid in the Tomb, complete the sequence, offering moments of sorrow, redemption, and hope.
The circular arrangement of the stations, integrated into the natural landscape, guides visitors through the story of the Passion, culminating in the towering crucifix. The artistry of each piece reflects both the human suffering and divine love central to the Christian faith, making this installation a space for prayer, meditation, and spiritual renewal.
